Getting to Hougang
Hougang sits on the North East Line — one of the city's purple-line MRT routes. From the city centre it's about 18 minutes door-to-door.
NE14 (North East Line) — main entry. Exit A opens directly into Hougang Central, the heart of the neighbourhood.

Stop 1 · Hougang Mall
Hougang Mall is the neighbourhood's main shopping centre — six storeys sat right above the Hougang Central Bus Interchange and connected to Hougang MRT by sheltered walkway. The mix is everyday Singapore: a supermarket basement, a food court, kid-friendly chains, a Daiso, the usual electronics shops, and a multiplex on top. Spend an hour here to see what suburban shopping really looks like outside the Orchard Road postcard.
Stop 2 · Hougang Public Library
One of the National Library Board's largest neighbourhood branches, Hougang Public Library sits on the upper floor of Hougang Mall. It's airy, quiet, and free to enter — a good place to escape the heat for an hour. Look for:
- The children's section at the back, with bilingual picture books and storytelling corners.
- The quiet study area at the front, often busy with students from nearby schools.
- Comfortable reading benches by the windows looking out over Hougang Central.
Bring an NLB membership card if you have one and you can borrow physical books and ebooks; otherwise just sit and read.
Stop 3 · Kovan & Heartland Mall
From Hougang MRT, take the train one stop south to Kovan for a different feel. Heartland Mall Kovan sits right above the MRT — smaller than Hougang Mall, but with a busy supermarket, lots of local food, and a quieter, more village-feeling square out front.
Outside Kovan MRT you're at the doorstep of one of the northeast's best hawker scenes — the Kovan food street (along Yio Chu Kang Road and Upper Serangoon Road) is famous for late-night supper stalls.
Stop 4 · Lunch at Kovan Hougang Market & Food Centre
For a proper hawker lunch, walk five minutes from Kovan MRT to the Kovan Hougang Market & Food Centre on Hougang Street 21. The classics here are old-school char kway teow, Hokkien mee, fish soup and chicken rice. Prices stay solidly under S$6 for most dishes — this is everyday Singaporean eating, not a tourist hawker centre.
Other neighbourhood food worth a detour:
- Hougang 1 mall (a 10-minute bus from Hougang Central) has a smaller food court but a lively basement supermarket and bakery.
- Hainanese Village Centre off Hougang Ave 5 has long-running breakfast stalls — ask the locals for the queues.
- Upper Serangoon Road kopitiams between Kovan and Hougang are reliable for kopi, kaya toast, and a half-boiled egg.
